In October 2025, three of OSL’s experienced EPICS engineers delivered a successful bespoke training course at the GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research in Darmstadt, Germany. Attended primarily by a group of radiation protection engineers, the course gave a three day introduction to EPICS which included a variety of topics from fundamentals such as the EPICS database through to more recent developments like pvaccess and Python client-side tools.
During the course the attendees worked on practical exercises using a brand new cloud-based training platform. These exercises gave some invaluable ‘hands-on’ experience of working with EPICS, including learning how to integrate a radiation monitor that will be actually used at the facility.
